A new innovated and cheep model in building artificial reefs OceanDocs
Mahmoud, M.A.; Ammar, M.S.A..
A novel and cheep approach for building artificial reefs was designed in such a way that sediments in an area of high sedimentation rate will be utilized in building the artificial substrate with no further sediment accumulation afterwards. The model consists of several steel cylinders which are soldered together in such a way to form a reef flat, a gentle slope and a steep slope, with two layers of narrow opening meshes (a lower plastic and an upper metallic one). Within a short periode (3 months), a substrate layer of a total of ~ 1 cm was formed between the two meshes, this layer increased to ~2 cm after 9 months. Transplants of the three species Stylophora pistillata, Echinopora gemmacea and Montipora spongiosa grow better when the attaching surface is...

Acclimatization and leaf anatomy of micropropagated fig plantlets Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Chirinéa,Chrystiane Fráguas; Pasqual,Moacir; Araujo,Aparecida Gomes de; Pereira,Alba Regina; Castro,Evaristo Mauro de.
The survival of micropropagated plants during and after acclimatization is a limiting process to plant establishment. There is little information on how the anatomy of vegetative organs of Ficus carica can be affected by culture conditions and acclimatization. The present research aimed to study the effects of time on culture medium and substrates during the acclimatization of fig tree plantlets produced in vitro, characterizing some leaf anatomy aspects of plantlets cultured in vitro and of fig trees produced in field. Plantlets previously multiplied in vitro were separated and transferred into Wood Plant Medium (WPM) where they were kept for 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 days. Different substrates were tested and studies on leaf anatomy were performed in order to...

Batch culture growth of Chlorella zofingiensis on effluent derived from two-stage anaerobic digestion of two-phase olive mill solid waste Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Travieso Córdoba,Lissette; Domínguez Bocanegra,Alma Rosa; Rincón Llorente,Bárbara; Sánchez Hernández,Enrique; Benítez Echegoyen,Francisco; Borja,Rafael; Raposo Bejines,Francisco; Colmenarejo Morcillo,Manuel Francisco.
This paper presents the use of an effluent derived from two-stage anaerobic digestion of two-phase olive mill solid waste (OMSW) as a substrate for the production of Chlorella zofingiensis in batch mode. Chlorella zofingiensis when grown autotrophycally can accumulate significant quantities of valuable carotenoids which are used as an additive in fish and poultry farming, as colorants in foods and in health care products. It was found that two-phase OMSW previously treated by two-stage anaerobic digestion and further sterilized may be used as a culture medium for the microalgae Chlorella zofingiensis. Typical growth curves were obtained using both the above-mentioned anaerobic effluent and a synthetic medium. Total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) and soluble...

Vasquez, Mickael; Mata Chacon, D.; Tempera, Fernando; O'Keeffe, Eimear; Galparsoro, Ibon; Sanz Alonso, J. L.; Goncalves, Jorge M. S.; Bentes, Luis; Amorim, Patricia; Henriques, Victor; Mcgrath, Fergal; Monteiro, Pedro; Mendes, Beatriz; Freitas, Rosa; Martins, Roberto; Populus, Jacques.
If marine management policies and actions are to achieve long-term sustainable use and management of the marine environment and its resources, they need to be informed by data giving the spatial distribution of seafloor habitats over large areas. Broad-scale seafloor habitat mapping is an approach which has the benefit of producing maps covering large extents at a reasonable cost. This approach was first investigated by Roff et al. (2003), who, acknowledging that benthic communities are strongly influenced by the physical characteristics of the seafloor, proposed overlaying mapped physical variables using a Geographic Information System (GIS) to produce an integrated map of the physical characteristics of the seafloor. In Europe the method was adapted to...

Zaghi Junior, Lienine Luiz; UNIPAR; Linde, Giani Andrea; UNIPAR; Colauto, Nelson Barros; Unipar.
Cultivation techniques for Agaricus brasiliensis (composting method) and substratum formulations are the same ones used for Agaricus bisporus. Most of the carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratios reported for A. brasiliensis are similar to those used for A. bisporus on the composting method and there are few studies about the variation of C:N ratios for A. brasilienses on the axenic method. The objective of this study was to verify the mycelial growth of A. brasiliensis on different C:N ratios using regional by-products as substrate formulation on the axenic method. Studied C:N ratios of substrate (mixture of soybean and cassava fibers) ranged from 11:1 to 248:1, with nitrogen content ranging from 4.25 to 0.20%, respectively. It was concluded that substrate with...

ABSTRACT: The aim of this research was to evaluate the feasibility of rescuing adult plants by cuttings from post-fire epicormic shoots. We evaluated the native tree species erva mate ( Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil.) and canjerana ( Cabralea canjerana Vell. Mart.), which present difficult seedling production and are economically and ecologically important. The plant material used for the preparation of cuttings consisted of shoots from bud differentiation of tissue from the stem collar of the trees. One-bud cuttings of erva mate were treated with 4000 or 8000mg L-1 of indolebutiric acid (IBA) and the checks were not treated with auxins. The cuttings were grown in three different substrates: carbonized rice husks, vermiculite and coarse sand. The experiment...

Distribution and habitat preference of Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera in subtropical mountain streams: implications for monitoring and conservation Anais da ABC (AABC)
PRINCIPE,ROMINA E.; MÁRQUEZ,JAVIER A.; CIBILS-MARTINA,LUCIANA.
Abstract: The assessment of biotic-habitat relationships provides key information to predict biotic responses to perturbations and important tools for river management and monitoring. This study aimed to assess the spatial distribution of Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera in mountain streams of central Argentina. We evaluated the effect of seasonality and identified the variables conditioning the abundance of the assemblages and the habitat with the highest taxonomic richness. Sampling was carried out in four streams (Carcarañá River basin) during high and low water periods. Three lotic habitats were sampled: riffles, coarse substrate runs, and fine substrate runs; and physicochemical and habitat variables were measured. We found differences in assemblage...

Diversidade de presas e predadores (Insecta) em mesohabitats de córregos de Cerrado Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Giehl,Nubia F. S.; Resende,Bethânia O.; Roges,Paulo F. S. S.; Dias-Silva,Karina; Nogueira,Denis S.; Cabette,Helena S. R..
ABSTRACT Tropical streams feature high variety of habitats and environmental gradients, which reflect on the greater richness of aquatic insects. In this way, we evaluate if the diversity of aquatic insects of prey and predator categories is influenced by the type of substrates or by longitudinal portions in Cerrado streams. Our hypothesis is that prey and predator diversity will be determined by the type of substrate, assuming that the substrate serves as a source for foraging and / or refuge. In addition, the folhiço substrate will present greater abundance and richness due to the availability of shelter and food provided by this type of substrate. There will be differences in prey and predator composition among substrates, since some species have...

Economic Analysis of Using Soybean Meal as a Mushroom Growing Substrate AgEcon
Fewell, Jason E.; Gustafson, Cole R..
Mushrooms have been grown commercially on many different substrates for years, usually agricultural by-products such as straw or stover. Increased popularity for specialty mushrooms with consumers has led to increased production and great demand for economic substrates. Oyster mushrooms are easier to grow relative to other types of mushrooms and their production has increased dramatically in recent years. This study examines the economic feasibility of using soybean hulls as a primary substrate for oyster mushrooms, replacing traditional wheat straw. The study uses a cost-benefit analysis to determine an optimal substrate based on yield and the number of crops harvested per year. The study shows that soybean hulls, combined with corn gluten or...

Edible mushroom Pleurotus sajor-caju production on washed and supplemented sugarcane bagasse Scientia Agricola
Moda,Evelise Moncaio; Horii,Jorge; Spoto,Marta Helena Fillet.
Traditionally, the cultivation of Pleurotus sajor-caju is performed on different composted and pasteurized agricultural residues. The objective of this study was to investigate whether traditional composting and pasteurization processes could be replaced by washed and supplemented (mineral or organic) sugarcane bagasse. In one experiment, fresh sugarcane bagasse was immersed in hot water at 80°C for two hours (control) or washed in fresh water for one hour using an adapted machine for residue treatment. In another experiment, fresh sugarcane bagasse was washed in fresh water (control), and supplemented with corn grits (organic supplementation), or supplemented with nutrient solution (mineral supplementation). In the first experiment, the washed bagasse...
